Our Story

A Pint-Sized Slice of History at The Black Horse

Pull up a chair and let us tell you a tale… The Black Horse isn’t just a pub; it’s a living piece of Moreton Morrell’s past, with a story stretching right back to the mid-1800s!

Believe it or not, our beloved pub began its journey as two cozy, adjoining cottages. Picture them standing here, quietly minding their own business.

Then, around the turn of the century, circa 1900, things changed a bit.

Ready for the new century

The right-hand cottage, already part of the pub’s growing charm, was embraced fully, and the whole place was cleverly converted into the single, welcoming building you see today, complete with that lovely big central porch.

The interior got a good refresh too, ready for the new century!

Village Greengrocers

And here’s a quirky tidbit: we weren’t always pouring pints! The Black Horse actually started life as a village greengrocer’s, where fresh produce slowly but surely made way for… well, for ale! Imagine popping in for your carrots and leaving with a foaming tankard!
Oh, and our name has a little history too. For a while, we were known as The Sea Horse – perhaps a nod to some long-lost maritime dream in landlocked Warwickshire!
But thankfully, in the early 1980s, we returned to our iconic name, The Black Horse, and it’s stuck ever since.

Cheers to that!

So, next time you’re enjoying a drink with us, take a moment. You’re not just in a pub; you’re in a piece of living history, a place where stories have unfolded for nearly two centuries.

Cheers to that!
